Mismanaged Repairs and Shoddy Materials: A Skipper’s Lament with Amico Loano

REVIEWS

As the skipper of a 26-metre sailing yacht, I brought my vessel to Amico Loano for what I was assured would be a routine maintenance and repair period. Unfortunately, the experience was anything but routine. The yard assigned the work to different teams with little oversight, and communication between departments seemed nonexistent. Important tasks were overlooked, minor issues were allowed to snowball, and at no point did anyone bother to consult me about progress.

The quality of materials used throughout the project was shockingly poor. Substandard plywood was installed in areas that should have been solid teak, and low-grade sealants were applied around hatches and windows. Within weeks of leaving the yard, the new joinery started to warp, and leaks appeared around the deck fittings. The engine room wiring was a tangled mess, with connectors not properly crimped or protected.

Costs were another sore point: the initial quote seemed reasonable, but the invoices quickly ballooned as «unforeseen complications» were added. No detailed breakdown was ever provided, and any attempt to challenge the charges was met with evasive answers.

In short, this refit has been a nightmare. I’ve spent countless hours and additional resources rectifying the shoddy repairs and replacing the cheap materials supplied by Amico Loano. If you value your yacht and your peace of mind, steer clear of this yard.
